THRU DEC 28 Enrique Chagoya: Borderlandia. "A world of cultural hybrids and collisions" animates the work of Mexican-born San Francisco artist Enrique Chagoya, who taps Mexico's complex history, international politics, world religions and popular culture in his art. Contemporary icons like Mickey Mouse, Superman, Wonder Woman, Che Guevara, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush may intermingle with more ancient figures, such as the Aztec god Mictlantecutli, Buddha, and the Virgin of Guadalupe among other religious icons in fantastic compositions. THRU JAN 4 WildLights at The Living Desert. This 15th annual holiday event opens the yuletide season with a festive light display, featuring more than 350,000 twinkling lights illuminating the park after dark. This annual event turns the desert into a holiday wonderland. Highlighting the event will be beautiful animated displays, giant Christmas trees, their popular LGB model train exhibits, and the return of the "iceless" skating rink! THRU JAN 18 Against All Odds: Keith Haring in the Rubell Family Collection
This exhibition presents work Haring produced after his early mural and graffiti art. Included in the exhibition are 70 paintings, drawings and one sculpture spanning from works he created for his first gallery exhibition in 1982 to others made closer to his death in 1990 at the age of 31. The exhibition also includes 33 works by other artists who were important friends and artistic peers in Haring's life, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, Tseng Kwong Chi, and Andy Warhol. Contextualized by the art of his associates, Haring's colorful and playful, yet equally powerful, acidic work records the lively engagement of art and culture that represented a key aspect of the New York art scene of the 1980s. The original Four Freshmen pioneered a new style of close-harmony vocals building on the barbershop tradition, and often accompanying themselves on guitar, trumpet, trombone, bass, and drums. 11 Great Hollywood Cameramen. Between film showings from the Palm Springs International Film Festival, David Kaminsky will moderate a lively conversation with two Oscar-winning cinematographers about their art and how a cameraman’s work is only as good as the director. Understanding the visual language, an experienced director has to have the confidence to let the cameraman take what the script requires and create the visuals. It is an enormous thrill to look through the camera and see the performance and scene come together—that is the magic moment the audience is looking for. Kaminsky is the former Vice-Chair of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. His dedication to Italian cinema earned him the Cavaliere della Republica Award, Italy’s cultural Medal of Honor. The kinds of subjects of the images of the American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) ranged from portraits to still lifes, from classical sculptures to contemporary nudes, some of which were overtly sexual and made him at least temporarily notorious. His most lasting legacy, however, and by far the largest portion of his considerable photographic output, is his portraiture which reflects and embodies the New York cultural milieu of the late 1970s and the 1980s. Fearful of a repetition of the First World War’s killing fields of Flanders, Churchill was an advocate of attacking Nazi Germany through Italy or even Yugoslavia. Thiebaud (born 1920) has long been a mainstay of California’s cultural and artistic communities. Since the early 1960s, he has shaped a personal artistic vision that embraces different subjects and stylistic variations but is always characterized by his blending of realism and abstraction, a penchant for dazzling light and high-keyed color, and a gift for painterly, sensuous handling of oils and pastels. 11 Battle Of Midway. Designed as a trap to destroy the remains of the American fleet, the Japanese Imperial fleet suffered its first major defeat at Midway, one from which it would never recovery.
